Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

Hurricane season is upon us!  The prediction from the National Hurricane Center for 2019 is an average to slightly below average season with five to seven hurricanes. This prediction is a slight decrease from 2018. Historically September is our worst month, having 25 storms over the last 3 years in the Carolinas. In 2016 Matthew, a CAT 5, made landfall in South Carolina and caused significant flooding and damage from fallen trees in our neighborhood. Statewide 28 deaths were reported as a result of Matthew. In 2017 Maria, a CAT 5, steered clear of our state but brushed the coastal area and the result was mostly rain.  In 2018 Florence, a CAT 4, made landfall south of Wilmington and caused significant flooding and property damage for a two-week period following the storm. Forty-three deaths were attributed to Florence.

At this time, it is prudent to start preparing for September, our worst month. If you intend to stay, stock up on bottled water, easy to prepare food, batteries, and check out your generator if you have one. Installing hurricane shutters is no longer an option as the local suppliers are booked thru the middle of October. Plywood is currently in ample supply but is typically not available as the storm approaches. Flood insurance is available, but there is a 30 day wait before coverage begins. Once the storm is named, flood insurance coverage is no longer available. Leaving the area is another option, but you need to secure your house and any items outside. Be prepared for an extended stay because the aftereffects are sometimes worse than the storm.

The Town of Carolina Shores and the POA will send out emails when a storm is predicted for our community. The Town typically provides sand and bags at the recycle center for residents. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best!

Office Renovation News – Kelly Wilson

CSPOA SECURITY KEY CARD/FOB AUDIT

The CSPOA has begun a security card/fob audit. This is the first one since its inception in 2008. The reason for doing this now is to gain better control of the cards/fobs that were out in the public.

CSPOA determined that an in-house audit was required to reduce the extremely high cost of having to restart the entire system, and it was felt that with the cooperation of our members, this can be accomplished with very few problems.

We are reverting to the original rules with a few enhancements. We will be issuing new members with homes two cards (previously each home was issued one, with the option of additional cards for purchase), and each home cannot possess more than two cards. This also pertains to members having double lots, or various lots with a residence. Members just owning lot(s) will be issued one card per membership.

Members may purchase a replacement card/fob at the POA office for $25.00 each. Fobs can be purchased in place of cards for the same cost. Only members and rental agents representing the owners will be allowed to activate and replace security cards on rental properties. Minimum rental period is six (6) months; any properties rented as Airbnb or short term will be suspended from any allowed access.

The rules were enhanced to not only benefit the members, but to also enhance security for the members.

We will be offering a onetime only buyback to all members having more than two (2) cards. This program will take place the month of August 2019.

This will give everyone a chance to bring the extra cards/fobs in during the current audit. An open day will be scheduled for the membership at the beginning of the month and another towards the end of the month just to do security card/fob business. After the thirty-one (31) days, the remaining overage of cards will be put in suspension until the members visit the POA office to reactivate their allotted cards.

Please do not call the POA Office and try to accomplish this as we will not do any over the phone. We ask all members to come in during regular business hours during the days of Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The following days of August 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and August 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. will be scheduled for security card/fob audit business, with a possible Saturday date TBA if needed.

New rules for security cards/fobs

In order to enter the clubhouse, pool area or tennis courts, you must have a magnetic key card/fob you scan at the entry to each of these areas. The Property Owner(s) of each lot with a residence or double lot with residence is entitled to two (2) free key cards and may purchase a key fob(s) in place of the card(s) for the cost of $25.00 each. The Property Owner(s) of an unimproved lot(s) is entitled to one (1) key card.

The key cards/fobs are available at the CSPOA office. In the event a key card/fob is lost, stolen or damaged, the Property Owner should notify the CSPOA as soon as possible. That key card/fob will be deactivated, and a replacement will be issued at a cost of $25.00.

Only two (2) cards will be issued per member(s) with a residence and one (1) card per member(s) of unimproved property.

Owners of properties that are rented may elect to allow the tenants to have access to the common facilities. In order to do this, you must file a completed Tenant Information form with the CSPOA explicitly granting privileges to specific individuals living in the home and assign the tenant(s) your owner’s card(s). This can also be done through rental agents with proper paperwork. Renters are not able to request or replace cards/fobs.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

The ACC is continuing to have un-improved lots bush hogged. Owners have been notified and we are working with those who are still in the process of obtaining a contractor. The properties under the control of the CSPOA are also being scheduled by the Board to be cleaned.

This month we will address the issue of parking off the designated areas (driveways) and signage on vehicles.

1.       All vehicles must be regularly parked on a designated, hard surface area. This is explained in the Rules & Regulations, Section III, subsection A5 as: parking area on the property owner’s lot is defined as a concrete, stone or rock area adjoining the driveway specially for use as a parking area.

2.       Overnight parking of commercial vehicles is prohibited. This is explained under Rules & Regulations section III, subsection B1 as: any vehicle that has commercial lettering is considered a commercial vehicle.

Again, if you are unsure or require information, please contact the ACC for guidance.

NOTICE: if you advertise in the bulletin, you need to renew your service ad in August for the next three (3) months (September, October and November); for sale ads need to be renewed every month.

Bowling Jim Ratcliff

Greetings from the Carolina Shores Bowling League. Last year there were sixteen (16) teams and look forward to adding more teams this year. We have a lot of new neighbors in the Carolina Shores area; come join us.

We normally bowl a 26-week season on Tuesday evenings at Little River Lanes in Little River, SC. We begin practice at 5:30 p.m. weekly and start bowling at 5:40 p.m. Normally we finish up no later than 8:15 p.m. We have bowlers of all skill levels in our unsanctioned “fun” league. Last year’s cost was $15 weekly. We do not anticipate an increase in cost this year. We concluded the season in April and followed up with a banquet at which we awarded over $7,000 in prizes, including our season ending party, where league members had their choice of prime rib, chicken cordon blue or salmon, free for all league members.

We are planning our organizational meeting at Little River Lanes on August 27 at 5:30 p.m. At our meeting we will elect officers for the new year, review our rules and season schedule and organize our teams for the coming season, which is expected to begin on September 10. We also plan to take a week off during Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks, allowing our members to enjoy the holidays. You can also pre or post bowl in case of any planned vacations.

It is really a fun season, spending a night out each week with friends and neighbors. Some of our members follow bowling with a bite to eat at various local restaurants. We look forward to seeing you at Little River Lanes on August 27 at 5:30 p.m. You may contact me via email at: Jnavsc@hotmail.com with any questions.

Second, is another Bingo go-round on Sunday, August 18, starting at 3:00 p.m. Cards cost $1 each and there will be money as well as “surprise” gifts for the winners! As before, contributing to the snack table will be appreciated. Water and soda will be provided, but BYOB if desired. This is always a fun activity, so join your neighbors at the POA clubhouse and good luck!

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThe members present at this month’s meeting enjoyed discussing world renowned author Isabelle Allende’s novel In the Midst of Winter. The story of two professors and a Guatemalan nanny who are thrown together by an accident that happens during a Brooklyn snowstorm takes the reader, via background stories, to Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Guatemala, while also leading us on an adventure to dispose of a body in upstate New York. While the author deals with several important issues such as human rights, the plight of immigrants and refugees, love, and healing, and then throws in a little humor to lighten things up,  those of us who have read some of her other books agreed with a number of book reviewers that this was not one of Allende’s best works.

The August meeting of the Book Discussion Group will be held in the POA library on Friday, August 16, at 10:00 a.m.  Our reading selection for the month is Love and Ruin by Paula McLain.
All Carolina Shores residents are welcome to attend!

Care Team – Beverly Rowse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
